TO YOU, WHO CALL ME MAMA
I don’t feel a need for praise or flowers. There is no entitlement to a breakfast in bed or a one-of-a-kind finger painting. All of the celebration I could ever ask for, is in the smile you give me whenever I walk in a room. The way you snuggle close when you’re getting sleepy. The way you raise an eyebrow when you know I’m about to be silly. The feeling of the weight of you on me when I hold you.
Today I’m humbled. Emotional at the awareness of the honour it is to call you mine.
Being your mother is the greatest thing I’ve ever done, or ever will do. You make my life complete, and give me a purpose unlike ever before. You are hopes and dreams, happiness and magic, pure love, and you radiate out into the world around you.
I stretched, grew, bled, healed, and did it all again. I changed completely, and it was all for you. From the moment I became your mother, my entire life is dedicated to this love we share.
I’ll read you bedtime stories, I’ll kiss your boo-boos. I’ll stay at the park for five more minutes, I’ll go in the water at the beach. I’ll rock you a little longer on those nights you need it. I’ll cry when you’re sad, and worry to the point of insanity when you’re sick. I’ll laugh at all your silly faces, and smell every flower you pick. I’ll cry on bad days because I’ll feel responsible and I’ll cry on good days because I’m so happy for you.
I won’t be perfect, I’ll make mistakes and I will always be learning, but one thing you can count on is that I will love with you my whole heart for all of my days. Those moments we spent attached are forever imprinted on me. Thank you, thank you, thank you. A day will not go by that I won’t feel deeply grateful to be your Mama.
